2. Open Educational Resources in Africa: A Revolution in Access and Quality

Open Educational Resources, or OER, are transforming education across Sub-Saharan Africa. These free, openly licensed materials include textbooks, lesson plans, videos, and interactive modules. OER break down cost barriers and allow educators to adapt and remix content for local relevance—exactly Edutext Africa’s mission.

The benefits of OER are well documented. These resources have helped institutions like Mindset Learn in South Africa disseminate curriculum-aligned TV and online content to over 3.5 million households elearningindustry.com.

Edutext’s OER model involves three stages. First, we curate materials aligned with national standards. Resources often come from platforms like Siyavula in South Africa and OER Africa’s portal, with focus on STEM and literacy saben.ac.za. Next, our team localizes content into local languages and integrates cultural examples. Finally, we train teachers on using, modifying, and distributing resources within their communities.

To support sustainable change, Edutext Africa conducts workshops and online webinars. We support educators in digital literacy, how to customize materials, and understanding open licensing. Despite strong benefits, challenges remain. Internet access remains limited and content curation can be overwhelming. Educators also need support to understand licensing and to adapt content ethically . Edutext addresses these by providing offline versions and easy guides in print or USB format.

Edutext Africa is also working with national ministries to embed OER principles in curriculum policy and teacher training.
